The Best and Worst Sport Films  4/7

Gridiron Still Lacking A Great

In recent times, American football has been a popular theme for sport films. A lot have been made in the last 20 years including hits such as Jerry Maguire, The Blind Side and the inspirational television series, Friday Night Lights. The first great film on the sport came in 1974’s The Longest Yard starring Burt Reynolds. The 2005 remake starring Adam Sandler and a cast of ex-wrestlers was a forgettable experience. Other notable flops include Leatherheads, Little Giants, Quarterback Princess, and Hometown Legend to name a few off a long list. American football seems to be a tough topic to master, and only 2000‘s Remember The Titans seems to stand out from the crowd as the only good representation of the sport.

Best Representation: Remember the Titans

The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a mixed raced integrated team. Starring Denzel Washington as coach Herman Boone, Remember The Titans is an inspiring drama. The emphasis on the players developing mutual trust, is absorbing to watch and cleanly directed. It doesn’t solely focus on American Football and it isn’t as predictable as most American Football films are.
