Spring Into Indies
Spring has sprung - and with it comes 10 high-profile indies, with A-list stars, to check out. All are scheduled to open in NY and LA on their respective release dates before heading soon to a city near you.
- The romantic workplace dramedy "Hello, My Name is Doris" has already been released (finally - Mar. 11). It stars Sally Field as an older woman who falls romantically for a much younger co-worker (played by "New Girl"'s Max Greenfield). Field received rave reviews when the film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival exactly a year ago.
- "The Bronze" was originally set to be distributed by Relativity, but when the studio went belly-up, Sony Pictures Classics decided to take over control on this gymnastics comedy co-starring Gary Cole and "SNL"'s Cecily Strong. Mar. 18
- Warner Bros. has put a lot marketing effort into "Midnight Special", a father-son sci-fi adventure saga with Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon. Mar. 18
- "I Saw the Light" is the highly anticipated Hank Williams Jr. biopic that was originally supposed to be an Awards Season contender. Tom Hiddleston (Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Elizabeth Olsen star. Mar. 25
- "Everybody Wants Some!!" is director Richard Linklater's follow-up to "Boyhood" and is being marketed as his "spiritual sequel" to "Dazed and Confused." Apr. 1
- Director, co-writer and star Don Cheadle is getting tons of praise for his drama "Miles Ahead," a biopic of legendary musician Miles Davis. Apr. 1"Demolition" comes from "Wild" and "Dallas Buyers Club" director Jean-Marc Vallee. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a man struggling with his day-to-day life following the death of his wife. Following "Prisoners," "Nightcrawler" and "Southpaw", Gyllenhaal is looking to solidify the title of dramatic actor of this decade. Apr. 8
- You don't often see Tom Hanks in a low-budget indie. He re-teams with "Cloud Atlas" co-director Tom Tykwer to bring Dave Eggers' novel "A Hologram for the King" to the screen. Hanks plays a gutsy businessman looking to sell a revolutionary concept to Saudi Arabia. Apr. 22
- "The Meddler" is "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" writer/director Lorene Scafaria's mother-daughter dramedy about a widow (Susan Sarandon) looking to start again with the help of her daughter (Rose Byrne) and a new love interest (J.K. Simmons). Apr. 22
- And since, technically, the Summer 2016 Movie Season doesn't begin until May 6 with "Captain America: Civil War", you can close-out the Spring Indie Season with the drama "A Bigger Splash" on Wed. May 4. Things get complicated when a rock superstar (Tilda Swinton) and her husband re-connect with an old friend (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter (Dakota Johnson) while on vacation.
See you at the (art) theatre!
