'Taxi Driver' Cinematographer Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award, Advises Young Filmmakers
Cinematographer Michael Chapman, of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull fame, will be awarded a lifetime achievement award next week at Camerimage, and has given young filmmakers some advice on what isn't required to make great cinema.
"It shouldn't be beautiful - it should be appropriate," Chapman said, maintaining that visual splendor can be "a terrible mistake." In fact, he said the most impressive images are "often things shot on people's cell phones."
On his own process, he "bloody well wasn't a great artist," so he says, but he found that "the actual light in the actual locations was far more emotionally evocative than anything I could do at that stage in my [early] career."
