20th Century Fox Was Hesitant About 'Logan,' Thought it Would Be Boring

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Logan is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and from the trailers alone has garnered plenty of love and excitement among fans both of X-Men and those that aren't as well. It certainly looks like a unique spin on the superhero genre, and could mimic Deadpool in its own way in becoming one of the biggest hits of the year.

But 20th Century Fox had some concerns of its own when putting the film into production. They were reportedly reluctant toward a darker Wolverine film and the thematic elements within the tale. Variety spoke with chairman Stacey Snider, who said "there was real consternation about the intensity of the tone of the film.

"It’s more of an elegy about life and death. The paradigm for it was a Western, and my colleagues were up in arms. It’s not a wise-cracking cigar-chomping mutton-sporting Wolverine, and the debate internally became, isn’t that freakin’ boring? Isn’t it exciting to imagine Wolverine as a real guy and he’s world-weary and he doesn’t want to fight anymore until a little girl needs him?"

There seems to actually be more interest in Wolverine than ever right now, from what Logan has given us so far, so the studio heads might be a little off the mark. If this can be a hit, then we might start seeing superhero films that are more often less action-oriented and by-the-books, and we might start heading into riskier territory.

Logan hits theaters March 3.
