69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - 2017 Categories and Nominations

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor The 69th annual Emmy Awards take place Sunday night in Los Angeles with host Stephen Colbert of the Late Show.

This year's show ushers in a bit of old and new for notable ensemble categories as well as individual categories. Streaming giants Amazon, Netflix and Hulu combine for a total 125 nominations and will look to push HBO's 111 total Emmy nominations.

Notably absent from this year's nominations for Outstanding Drama Series are The Americans, Mr. Robot, Orange is the New Black, and two-time winner Game of Thrones. (Season 7 did not meet this year's deadline). Netflix's House of Cards and AMC's Better Call Saul are the lone holdovers from 2016 and will compliment five new shows to 2017's 'Outstanding Drama' nominations, including Netflix's Stranger Things and The Crown, NBC's This is Us, and Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. Leading the way with 22 total nominations is HBO's Westworld, who may be the favorite to take home Outstanding Drama in Game of Thrones absence.

Outstanding Comedy Series is another notable category to watch as the diverse ensembles will have to overcome HBO's two-time Outstanding series winner Veep. Among the contenders are Atlanta, Black-ish and Master of None

Saturday Night Live, Westworld and Stranger Things have already been awarded a host of technical and guest acting awards from this past weekend's Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Actor Alexis Bledel took home 'best guest actress' for The Handmaid’s Tale, and Gerald McRaney won 'best guest actor' for This Is Us.

Four years ago, streaming giant Netflix earned a total of 14 Emmy nominations with House of Cards and Arrested Development. Three years later, Netflix increased their nomination share by over 80% with 91 total nominations for 2017. Amazon will look to keep its momentum with 16 total nominations, including 7 for past Emmy winner Jill Soloway's critically acclaimed Transparent. And Hulu could get a huge boost if the dystopian adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale can take home any one of their 18 nominations.

On a personal note, I'm still tilting bigly over the absence of CARRIE COON for her work in the third and final season of The Leftovers.
