Ahead of AMC's New Series, 'The Terror,' the 168 Year-Old Mystery Has Been Solved
AMC is preparing its anthology series based on the Terror, and now, ironically, the 168-year-old mystery has been solved. An Arctic Research Foundation team has located the missing ship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin in perfect condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay.
The AMC series is based on the 2007 bestselling novel by Dan Simmons, and is a fictionalised account of the lost expedition of the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror. It's set in 1847, and follows the Royal Navy expedition's search for the Northwest Passage and is subsequently attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and crews.
In response to the discovery, AMC president of original programming Joel Stillerman had some rather humorous words to offer when speaking with Deadline.
“We congratulate the Arctic Research Foundation on finding The Terror 168 years later. Apparently they’ve never heard of a spoiler alert.”
The 10-episode series is written by David Kajganich, who is showrunner along with Soo Hugh. The true story exepdition saw 129 men all die. Searchers continued on for 11 years after the disappearance, but had no luck. Since then, many theories and explanations have appeared, including Simmons' supernatural take.
