'All I See is You' is a stunning thriller that doesn't quite deliver (TIFF Review)
Director Marc Forster brings us the story of a blind young woman, played by Blake Lively, who regains sight after surgery. A wonderful occurance that disrupts her and her husbands life in many ways.
A Transformation in Bangkok
'All I See is You' is a quite stunning film set in Bangkok, picking up some great locations along the way. It follows Blake Lively as Gina and Jason Clarke as James in a pivotal moment in their relationship.
First we see Gina quite dependent on James. She's helpless when they're outside, or at a bar at one point. Which is quite natural, she is blind. And James seems to leave her by herself on purpose, enjoying to see her lost.
It is Blake Lively in one of her best roles yet. Undergoing a full transformation when she gets surgery and slowly regains her sight.
But James doesn't seem to happy with the change of power in their relationship, while Gina starts to get interested in a lot of new and different things, now that she can see again.
Psychological Thriller
Slowly the story turns into a psychologic thriller, where both start to lose trust in each other. It's an aspect of the film that doesn't quite feel as well rounded as the rest of the film. And we mostly seem to stay on the surface with a simple soap opera-esque drama.
Most of the rest of the film is well done though. Marc Forster is an accomplished director that can capture an audience like no other. The visual transformation we get to see through Gina's eyes, as well as the mostly sterile Bangkok locations in the film are quite stunning to witness. It's just too bad there isn't more story to go on.
'All I See is You' premiered at #TIFF16 and doesn't have a release date yet.
