AMC to detail the History of Comic Books in Documentary Miniseries
$248 million per month was spent as of the end of 2015 on the top 300 comic books in print. That excludes digital sales, and comics below the 300 mark. Comic books are booming, largely thanks to their growth into something greater than superhero fare. They're fictional literature in their own right.
So AMC, which houses two comic book adaptations (three if we're including spin-offs), is developing a documentary series to celebrate, titled Heroes and Villains: The History of Comic Books. The series is being produced by Robert Kirkman's Skydance Entertainment.
Set to premiere in 2017, the series will take a behind-the-scenes look at the comic book industry and explore the people, places, and events that have all aided the industry's growth over the past decades. Additionally,it will explore the history and origins of timeless characters and hot topics such as politics, race, gender, and sexuality, and how these things have been handled within the industry.
Kirkman and David Alpert (The Walking Dead) will executive produce alongside Bryan and Sean Furst (Skybound), as well as AMC's Eliot Goldberg and Kelly Nash.
“We are incredibly excited to continue our partnership with Robert, David and Skybound. Beyond The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, they are prolific producers and publishers who have an amazing knowledge of comic book history and genre storytelling," AMC president of programming Joel Stillerman said.
"We believe going deep into the history behind some of the greatest comic books will be of great interest to this audience.” Robert Kirkman also expressed his excitement.
“At the end of the day I am a comic fan first and foremost. I am a lover of the medium and the stories it enables people to tell. I’m excited to partner with AMC once again to bring the stories of some the most influential people in comics to a television audience.”
