American Society of Cinematographers Announces Award Nominations
Nominations have been announced to try and decide the top cinematographers of 2015, which is no small task given the enormous talent and visual rewards the year brought from the industry's top talent.
The nominees are Roger Deakins for Sicario, Janusz Kaminski for Bridge of Spies, Ed Lachman for Carol, Emmanuel Lubezki for The Revenant, and John Seale for Mad Max: Fury Road. Three of these nominations can be notably described as brutal-depictions of harsh, natural landscapes (Mad Max, Revenant, and Sicario).
Lubezki is a frontrunner if only for his use of natural light. His cinematography is a selling point in the marketing for the film, and the back-to-back best achievement academy award-winner will be looking to add more to his cabinet following on the heels of Birdman and Gravity.
Of course, none of the nominees are to be scoffed at in an incredibly competitive field. The list gives us a solid insight into who may be announced for Oscar nomination on January 15, but the ASC awards deserve their own recognition in and of themselves. The winner will be announced on February 14 at the 30th ASC Awards ceremony.
