'Batman: The Killing Joke' Producer Reveals Why the Film Saw Delays
Batman: The Killing Joke is one of the most famous Batman graphic novels of all time, and for a while the question wasn't 'if,' but 'when' it would earn itself an animated adaptation, given the company's habit of capitalising on classics and bringing them to live.
Producer Bruce Timm was asked just what took so long in an interview with Empire, to which he was candid. "...Right around the time we were ramping up, the Watchmen movie was released and underperformed. Everybody kind of took a step back and said, ‘Well, maybe the time's not right for an R-rated superhero movie, so put it on the shelf.’
"A couple of years later, it came up again and we even had started production with character designs and stuff. But then that horrible shooting at the Dark Knight Rises theater happened and everybody got nervous again about it, because of gun violence, so we put it back on the shelf."
It's easy to understand, given Hollywood is a heavily reactive business. Whatever the case, the film has finally happened, and will reach shelves August 2. Prior to that, it's available digitally from July 23.
