'Batman: The Killing Joke' Writer on That Controversial Twist Between Batman and Batgirl
After clips leaked online yesterday revealing Batman and Batgirl to be involved in a physical relationship, fans quickly became either perplexed or even angry at the interesting new dynamic. Writer Brian Azzarello has come out at SDCC to explain the direction.
"The thing about this is that it's controversial, so we added more controversy," Azzarello said. "I think she is stronger than the men in her life in this story. She controls the men in her life in this story."
Azzarello stresses that the story arc that follows, in which Batgirl is crippled by the Joker, strengthens the femae protagonist rather than enhances Batman's connection to the traumatic experience. "She comes off as a stronger character at the end of that arc," Azzarello said.
The film hits shelves on July 25.
