Boba Fett's Original Role in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Revealed

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell To this day, despite his unceremonious culling early on in Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett remains a fan-favourite character from the original trilogy. But things may have worked out very differently for the character, making his sudden departure make a whole lot more sense.

George Lucas had intended for a third trilogy that would detail Luke and Darth Vader's confrontation, as well as the battle with the Empire. An entire trilogy was designed, but in the end it was squashed down into one film.

The third film initially, then, would have had Boba Fett rescuing Han Solo, with Fett playing the main villain of the film, following his introduction in The Empire Strikes Back. So the third film would have explored things such as, 'why was he taking Han Solo away in the first place?' In the end, Lucas threw away that angle, and so we're left with a gobbled-up Boba Fett in the opening ten minutes.

Early reports from some time ago indicate there might yet be life in Boba Fett, with a solo film teased alongside Rogue One and Han Solo. While those two have been officially announced, obviously, no such confirmation has come regarding Fett. Regardless, it won't see the light of day until 2019, if at all.
