Box Office: Ride Along maintains #1 spot for third consecutive week during Super Bowl weekend

This weekend kicked off February and was also Super Bowl weekend— normally a slow burner for the box office. With everyone's attention focussed on America's biggest sporting event of the year, theatres did see a notable drop in audience numbers. Although, this weekend did mark an improvement in earnings ($72.4million) compared to last year's Super Bowl weekend, but it was still a fairly poor showing.

Ride Along maintained it's spot at the top of the box office for the third consecutive week. It fell 42% to an estimated $12.3million, but anything around the $10-$15million mark was always going to take first place this weekend.

Disney's animated blockbuster Frozen added an estimated $9.3million to it's ever-growing total gross of $360million. If it maintains this pace, it will beat Despicable Me 2 ($368million) by Valentine's Day.

Third place went to newcomer, That Awkward Moment, which brought in an estimated $9million. For Zac Efron, it's the lowest nationwide weekend debut of his career to date. Focus Features targeted this film at young women, not surprisingly, thats who bought a ticket. 64% of the audience was female, with 61% of them women being under the age of 25. Statistics like them over the years suggest a steep second weekend drop off. It would be surprising if this movie made more than $25million.
