Box Office Rundown: The Revenant Reaches $300 Million Globally, More
On top of the usual Star Wars record-breaking news of the weekend, The Revenant has passed $300 million globally all the while The Martian crosses the $600 million line in a weekend full of milestone achievements.
The DiCaprio starring survival epic also topped foreign box office charts, reaching $24 million. The film debuted in Spain and Brazil last weekend to earn $3.8 million and $1.8 million, respectively. The numbers come after Alejandro G. Inarritu won back-to-back top accolades at the Directors Guild Awards, for Birdman last year and now for The Revenant (the worldwide tally for which now stands at $326 million).
Kung Fu Panda 3 made $23 million overseas, scoring second place over the weekend. The film is mightily popular in China, having made $15.4 million last weekend and $101.7 million since opening two weeks ago. This is in comparison to the U.S. tally of just under $70 million.
Korean crime film A Violent Prosecutor scored third place ($19.5 million), followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip ($12.8 million), and The Hateful Eight and Les Tuche 2, tied for fifth place with $8.5 million each.
