Bryan Singer Reveals His Regret for Not Directing 'X-Men: The Last Stand'
Bryan Singer brought X-Men to a mainstream audience way back with the first two films in the franchise, but departed for the third, X-Men: The Last Stand. He departed to work on Superman Returns for Warner Bros., and Brett Ratner took the helm for the lackluster third film.
Singer spoke with Fandango about the departure, and admitted regret for departing given that he prefers to see things to their conclusion. "I like finishing things. I like finishing this particular iteration. I know X-Men 3 was quite rushed and I didn't complete it, and I felt a little like it was probably my responsibility to do that as a filmmaker, and I didn’t."
The Last Stand and, subsequently, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film spelt a period of uncertainty for the franchise, which seemed to be deteriorating. Then the First Class trilogy came, and Days of Future Past pressed rewind to give the franchise a minor reboot. "I might not have killed all those characters. But that's what was so fun about Days of Future Past.
"We had a joke on set: 'Hey Brian, you're not only directing Days of Future Past — you're actually living it!' I was going back and making changes in history. [With X-Men: The Last Stand], I don't fault anyone, including myself. It was just that circumstances didn't allow for it to happen."
X-Men: Apocalypse hits U.S. theaters on Friday. So far, reactions have been mixed for the trilogy-closing sequel.
