Cary Fukunaga and HBO to Team on Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon Project
Filmmaker Cary Fukunaga and HBO are looking to reteam for a project Stanley Kubrick had been developing based on French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his struggle to bring Europe under his control.
Kubrick's family has allowed HBO access to the director's archives, including work-in-progress original scripts and notes. Steven Spielberg expressed interest in the Napoleon drama a few years ago, and will serve as an executive producer alongside Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey through Amblin Television.
"I am sure HBO will take full advantage of the material we have. We have provided [them] with stacks of material," Harlan said. "I am delighted that Stanley’s huge efforts may finally lead to a film."
Kubrick put extensive research into Napoleon back in the 60s, researching, writing a script and creating a database of over 17,000 photographs of Napoleon-era artifacts. Plans had then put to the side for the project.
Fukunaga directed and executive produced season 1 of True Detective, and is currently working on TNT series The Alienist.
