Cathy Yan will direct Margot Robbie's "Harley Quinn Spinoff"
The previously billed Margot Robbie-led "Harley Quinn" standalone is now looking like a spinoff featuring an ensemble of superheroes, including Batgirl's Barbara Gordon.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are in negotiations with Cathy Yan to direct their "Untitled Harley Quinn" spinoff. If negotiations are successful, Yan will become the first female Asian American to direct a superhero film and second female next to Patty Jenkins to helm a DC project. In other words, this is huge people!
According to Deadline, the former Ivy league grad and Wall Street Journalist-turned-filmmaker wowed Warner Bros. and DC brass with an “exceptional” pitch based on DC’s Birds of Prey series. It was not confirmed who, if anyone from Prey's crime fighting heroines will be featured in WB's spinoff, but it's a good bet Yan's story features one or more of Prey's core members led by Barbara Gordon (Batgirl), Dinah Lance (Black Canary), or Helena Bertinelli (Huntress).
Let’s not forget it was Robbie who first revealed plans back in November telling MTV "other women" will be featured in her Quinn spinoff and that "[Quinn] needs her girlfriends and needs other girls around her!" Now that Christina Hodson is attached to write the scripts for both Batgirl and WB's "Untitled Harley Quinn" film, it's looking more and more likely we'll see an expanded cast of DC's celebrated female villains and heroines in Robbie's Harley Quinn spinoff.
