Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Lend Their Voices To Amazon's 'Comrade Detective'
Comrade Detective's first look offers a glimpse at Channing Tatum's method approach = Vodka, VHS, and VHR.
Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's new buddy cop-spoof Comrade Detective - formerly titled 'Iron Fisting' - kind of says all you need to know about Amazon's quirky new series. But it's not the spoof or the title that elevates my interest from good to great, it's that Comrade Detective is essentially a live-action vehicle that features a star-studded list of ::voice:: works you would come to expect from Disney, Dreamworks, or Universal's animated tentpoles.
Enter Comrade Detective's intriguing proposition: It will be presented entirely in Romanian with Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici in the lead roles — AND dubbed in English as a Romanian show set during the 1980's. Adding another creative zing - the Romanian actors will be dubbed over with the voices of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt as the lead characters, along with vocal works of Jenny Slate, Chloe Sevigny, Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Oscar-winner Kim Basinger, Emmy-winner Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, and Debra Winger (where have you been!?). But last and perhaps most noteworthy among these vocal talents is Daniel Craig - who will lend his voice as "Father Anton Steza" for two episodes.
Comrade Detective - not to be confused with Comrade Fisting (which I was about to type) or True Comrade (another Freudian slip) - will feature six - 40 minute - episodes, written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka (The Sitter). All six episodes drop August 4 for Amazon Prime subscribers.
Rather than highlighting the synopsis, which you can read below, I encourage you to check out the trailer and decipher whose voice is who!?
Synopsis
In the thick of 1980's Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country's most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel and Joseph Baciu investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by-what else-but the greatest enemy: Capitalism.
