China Saved The Dark Universe, The Mummy Reaches $400 Million Worldwide
The Mummy was smacked by the critics. It also didn't perform well at the U.S box office. With a disastrous $31 million opening weekend. This film was the start to Universal's Dark Universe that will focus on classic monster movie remakes in a connected cinematic universe.
The current worldwide support will give Universal confidence in The Dark Universe. Another film that was thought of as a box office flop. Baywatch made $119 million worldwide. This is compared to its domestic total of $58 million on a $69 million budget. Both Baywatch and The Mummy could possibly get sequels.
Maybe the American audience couldn't connect to The Mummy. Yet maybe they will connect to The Bride of Frankenstein film that is scheduled for 2019. Either way it looks like The Dark Universe is safe for now.
Universal's Dark Universe has a large line up. The unique line up includes The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Van Helsing, Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
As someone who loves cinematic universes. Thank you China. We owe you one.
