Concerns at Warner Bros. as Rumours Surface that James Wan may Exit Aquaman Movie
Birth.Movies.Death are reporting that director James Wan may be walking away from Warner Bros. Aquaman solo film, scheduled for a 2018 release. This comes immediately after Seth Grahame-Smith exited The Flash over creative differences.
There may well be cracks forming in Warner Bros.' fast-tracked cinematic universe as the studio fights to become a challenger for Marvel in live-action stakes. The pressure is certainly on the company, with people left and right asking why they can't do for DC what Marvel has achieved.
And while Warner Bros. announced a massive slate before their universe had even kicked off, and touted a filmmaker-driven world, it seems that may not be coming to fruition as creators within the walls look to break out of them.
Rumours have it that James Wan is feeling the pressure of his role in the lead of Aquaman, and may be feeling as though he doesn't need it as much as Warner Bros. needs him. By extension, reports suggest there's disruption between Zack Snyder and the executive force of the studio over Justice League.
Given that there wasn't enough time for them to re-evaluate following Batman v Superman due to how soon after Justice League production would kick off, it seems their next option is to muscle a new direction onto Snyder. There's whispers that Seth Grahame-Smith did not depart The Flash but was simply let go.
While none of this is definitive apart from Grahame-Smith's departure, Wan may be the next announcement to depart from the universe, and with that some serious doubts will go from bad to worse.
Snyder's response to Batman v Superman reception was of sad acceptance, but the filmmaker probably isn't having any easier a time where he probably feels he belongs, on set, because there's a good chance he's no longer the puppeteer for this franchise. Instead, the studio may be pulling the strings a little too tightly on its creators.
