"Cooley High" Remake Set At MGM

rodneyholley rodneyholley DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven), Common (Selma) and Tony Krantz (24) are collaborating on a remake to the 1975 coming-of-age cult classic Cooley High. Seth Rosenfeld (How to Make It in America) has been tapped to pen the script. MGM will oversee the production.

The original Cooley High was set in the 1960s and followed a group of African American high school kids who hoped and dreamt of making it out of the South Side of Chicago. The film didn't follow the popular blaxploitation mold but instead chose to show a serious and light-hearted look at education, masculinity and gang violence in the black community. The film was made for $750,000 and went on to gross $13 million.

No director or cast are currently attached to the remake.
