'Creed' Director Ryan Coogler Confirmed for Marvel's 'Black Panther'
At just 29 years of age, Ryan Coogler stands out as one of the younger competitors in the directing chair of feature films, and is coming off a fantastic 2015. In the aftermath of Fruitvale Station and then the hugely successful Creed, it looks like 2016 is going to get even better.
Coogler was for months a top candidate for the job along with Ava DuVernay and F. Gary Gray, but has finally been confirmed.
A Black Panther film has been circling for a decade now, and now it's on its way to a February 2018 release date. The solo film has been described as a "geopolitical action adventure", and last week it was revealed that the movie will connect in a big way to Avengers: Infinity War (also coming in 2018).
Earlier, Coogler said in an interview on the topic of black directors and women directors taking on jobs focused on black and female characters, that "I do believe that the opportunity for the film to have more nuance will come when you're looking at filmmakers that bring a little bit of that from their personal experience."
