Creed Sequel Targets 2017 Release
After the breakaway success of Creed, the follow-up to the Rocky franchise, MGM is hoping for a release of its sequel two years from the first, for a November 2017 date.
Variety asked MGM CEO Gary Barber about it, and he responded with "That's my goal." There was little doubt about there being a sequel, considering that Creed has reinvigorated the Rocky universe and the emerging star that is Michael B. Jordan ready to start pulling in audiences all on his own.
However, there's no guarantee he'll return. Recently Sylvester Stallone suggested the next film may actually go back in time, to feature Stallone and Carl Weathers interacting before Apollo's dead in 1985's Rocky IV. "Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together," Stallone said. "Think of the Godfather 2. That's what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious."
Whether a 2017 release means the return of Ryan Coogler as director, shadows are cast all over. The filmmaker looks to be taking on Marvel's Black Panther, and Stallone himself said "I know Ryan is going is going to be gone for a couple years. There's a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel."
