David Yates Confirms a Bigger Role in 'Fantastic Beasts 2' for Zoe Kravitz
Zoe Kravitz was a late addition to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She's seen only as a photograph, and plays Leta Lestrange, Newt's former lover. Director David Yates, who will be back for the sequel, has said that Leta will be back in a bigger role.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Yates said that "yes, Leta Lestrange comes into the second movie. She's quite complicated and damaged and confused, and Newt is absolutely still in love with her. So, she has a kind of power over him, and she, yeah, she's a kind of tragic figure, so we will see a bit more of her in the second movie."
We learn very little about Leta in the first film, only that she was an outsider like Newt, and from the little information she gained about her, Queenie described her as a "taker" while indicating that Newt needs a "giver."
The surname of the character will ring bells for any even mild fan of the Harry Potter franchise, given it's the same surname as Voldemort's infamous right-hand, Bellatrix, who is guilty of murdering a good number of good guys, most notably Sirius Black in the fifth film.
Yates did go on to confirm that Newt, Tina, Queenie, Jacob, and Credence will all be back for the second film, but Newt may not remain the series protagonist going forward.Johnny Depp will be back as Gellert Grindelwald, following his cameo appearance in the first film.
The next film is slated for November 16, 2018.
