Director Justin Linn on Deconstructing Star Trek
Crossing over from adopting another big franchise, Fast and Furious director Justin Linn discussed with Daily beast what he aims to do with the third film in the rebooted sci-fi franchise.
"At its core I felt that on this chapter if we could deconstruct Trek and then reaffirm why it's great, maybe send it off and it'll have a long run after this, that to me in a more cerebral sense was the mission on this one."
The action-centric first trailer for Star Trek Beyond has copped a lot of criticism, though Simon Pegg is adamant that there's plenty more to the film. Considering trailers are intended to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, it's little wonder that the trailer went this route.
If the film does retain the identity that Star Trek fans are looking for, then the next trailer should show it off. The team behind the film went into the film wanting to be bold and risk-taking, and for better or worse that's what we have.
Lin has stated that the inciting incident for the film will involve the destruction of the iconic starship, so there's bold and risky for starters. The film opens July 22, 2016. There's plenty of time for faith to be restored to long-time Trek fans.
