Disney CEO Bob Iger Responds to the Idea of The Russo Brothers Doing Star Wars
Disney CEO Bob Iger responded to a fan on Twitter after they suggested the Avengers: Endgame directors take up Star Wars.
The Russo Brothers directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014. After doing an excellent job continuing Steve Rogers/Captain America's story the duo got to helm Captain America: Civil War which featured more prominent MCU players and would lay the groundwork for bigger Marvel ensemble casts. The Russo Brothers would get to direct Infinity War and Endgame to round out the Infinity Saga.
We have reported on before that the Russo Brothers would love to direct a Star Wars film. After Endgame's successful opening, a fan on Twitter suggested that the duo direct a Star Wars film to Disney CEO Bob Iger. The head of Disney had an enthusiastic reply.
Love them!— Robert Iger (@RobertIger) April 28, 2019
Bob Iger said he loves them. The now Twitter savvy CEO of Disney probably just added fuel to the fire that the duo could get a Star Wars film or trilogy if they wanted it. This is probably just friendly banter but the possibility of the Russo Brothers directing Star Wars should excite everyone involved.
Currently, Lucasfilm is focused on Disney+ and wrapping up the Skywalker Saga. It has been assumed that the company will take a hiatus from Star Wars in theaters until a later date.
The Russo's wouldn't be the first MCU directors to cross over with Star Wars as Jon Favreau and Taika Waititi are both involved with the Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The former serving as the creator/executive producer and the latter is directing and starring in the series.
It's also important to note that the Russo Brothers have teamed with the writing pair of Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus for all their MCU outings so they foursome deserve well amount of praise. And maybe we should be asking if McFeely and Markus want to write a Star Wars film?
The Russo Brothers are currently exiting the MCU to focus on other projects like the true life drama Cherry which will star Tom Holland. The duo did mention they would return to the MCU if they got a chance to direct Secret Wars.
In this point in time the only theatrical projects for Star Wars are mostly director-less. Rian Johnson is writing a trilogy and it is assumed he will direct the first film but that whole situation is a mess on the internet. The Game of Thrones duo David Beinoff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce their Star Wars trilogy after the final season of Game of Thrones wraps.
Even though the Russo Brothers seem like they would love to do Star Wars. Disney needs to lock them down before other studios offer them other projects.
