Disney CEO on 'Rogue One': "There Are No Political Statements In It"
Rogue One doesn't come out until this Friday. Although there has already been quite a stir. Here's the backstory of Rogue One becoming political.
Rogue One writer Chris Weitz tweeted remarks at President-elect Donald Trump. Comparing Trump's presidency to The Empire from Star Wars. Weitz since has deleted the tweet and apologized.
Then a #BoycottStarWars campaign started. Which is ridiculous when Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises in the world.
Bob Iger chimed in on the situation at the Rogue One premiere. " I think the whole story has been overblown and, quite frankly, it's silly," Iger continued " have no reaction to [this] story at all. Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film. There are no political statements in it, at all."
Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards and acts as a prequel to George Lucas 1977 film.
"[Rogue One] has one of the greatest and most diverse casts of any film we have ever made and we are very proud of that, and that is not a political statement, at all," said Bob Iger.
"I have seen the film a number of times, and only a few other people have gotten to see it. So, now we get to share it with the world," said Iger. "We know it's great, and we can't wait for other people to discover that."
Rogue One is tracking a $130 million box office debut weekend. That would make it the second largest December open.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is about a group of rebels trying to steal the plans to the Death Star. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed. Plus it has a original score from Michael Giacchino.
