Disney is developing another top-secret VR short film, VR Team exploring projects with existing Disney characters
CNET reported Walt Disney Animation is making another VR short film.
Cycles director Jeff Gipson is working on another top-secret VR film. Cycles is currently on display at 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Utah. The new film that Gipson is developing will be three to five minutes long. Cycles is three minutes long.
Yet, there is something more exciting happening that involves virtual reality and Walt Disney Animation. The head of Disney’s professional development program Nicholas Russell revealed that the VR team is allowed to explore projects with already existing Disney characters. This could open up some incredible storytelling. Not to mention The VOID and Disney have already collaborated to bring characters from Wreck-It Ralph and Star Wars to life.
Virtual reality is a medium that Disney is willing to explore. Disney was also recently the lead investor for virtual reality start-up Jaunt VR during its impressive $66 million funding round. Disney also has its own VR tool.
Cycles is about one family in a midcentury modern California home, which the short jumps back and forth in time within the span of 40 years. Most of the shorts that are created by Russell’s internal program rarely get released. Cycles was made in four months. So there is a possibility we can be seeing Gipson’s next project soon.
It looks like we could be seeing a lot more virtual reality in Walt Disney Animation’s future.
