Disney's Live-Action 'Lilo & Stitch' Headed to Disney+
Have you sold your soul to Disney+ yet?
It’s been roughly a year and a half since we last heard any news about Disney’s live-action treatment of 'Lilo & Stitch'. Today, we have learned some exciting details that seem to indicate Disney's moving the live-action adaptation from in development to production along with plans to release the film on Disney’s new streaming service.
The folks over at The DisneyInsider have learned that production on Disney’s live-action hybrid will begin filming in Hawaii this fall. Additionally, sources say that a director’s search is currently underway and Chris Sanders - writer and voice actor on 2002’s original recipe - will lend his talents reprising the voice of Stitch!
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich - the same team behind Will Smith's live-action Aladdin reboot - will produce, with newcomer Mike Van Waes on board to write based on Chris Sanders 2002 screenplay. Unconfirmed sources say Disney’s live-action version will follow the same story as 2002’s animated adventure which features a young Hawaiian girl's (Lilo) bond with the galaxy's most wanted extraterrestrial (Stitch) after crash-landing on earth.
Much like Mulan, Lilo & Stitch offers a similar blueprint, in which the story is culturally relevant and features people of color. Hopefully this one continues to gain traction.
