Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling Dance in 'La La Land'
Whiplash director Damien Chazele's upcoming movie 'La La Land' is a love story musical set in Los Angeles between a jazz musician (played by Ryan Gosling) and a struggling actress (Emma Stone).
The movie appears as a departure from the intense Oscar-nominated Whiplash. A photo recently released by the studio via EW evokes a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance number. Indeed, Chazele cited the classic Top Hat (1935) as a reference point.
Chazele also deliberately chose the Los Angeles setting. "I wanted to make a big love letter to the city and focus on that push and pull that all young artists experience, between dream and reality, which old Hollywood musicals are so good at expressing"
This is the third time Stone and Gosling worked together. They were previously cast in Gangster Squad (2013) and Crazy, Stupid Love (2011). Award-winning actor JK Simmons and singer/songwriter John Legend are also cast in this movie.
La La Land will arrive in theatre on July 15, 2016.
