Fantastic Four sequel happening, according to Simon Kinberg
Despite its woeful box office performance and reviews that could charitably be described as "not good", it appears that Fantastic Four is still set for a sequel.
In a recent interview with MTV, writer/producer Simon Kinberg revealed that he and the team at 20th Century Fox were currently hard at work on Fantastic Four 2, with Kinberg stating, "We're still figuring out what that movie would be. I'd like that to happen."
Given the vitriolic response shown by fans and critics alike towards the last Fantastic Four film, not to mention its financial failure (it only made $160 million against a $120 million budget), moving forward on a sequel seems quite brave on the studio's part, and it will be a struggle to fill the seemingly vacant director's seat for the awesome foursome's second go around.
While the original cast, including Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm), are expected to return along with Kinberg, it seems all but certain that original director Josh Trank won't be welcomed back, after much was made in the media of his turbulent relationship with the executives at Fox.
If Trank is indeed out of the picture, Fox will have an uphill battle on its hands to secure a talented replacement who is both willing to take on the battered franchise as well as deal with the incredible level of scrutiny that will surround the follow up to a such a prominent flop.
Kinberg, at least, seems optimistic that he and whoever does ultimately sign on to direct can turn things around for Marvel's First Family, telling MTV: "I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie that we've made with that cast. So I'm gonna figure out what that is."
With Fantastic Four 2 pencilled in for a June 9, 2017 release date, whether or not the film actually gets the final greenlight would appear to depend on just how quickly Kinberg can transform his vision for a better FF movie into something the studio feels confident will erase the stigma of what came before.
