Foreign Oscars on the Horizon to Rival Current Academy's 'Discrimination'

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell A Russian Filmmakers' union plans on establishing a 'Eurasian Oscar' that focuses on films shot in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and in surrounding areas (shortened to BRICS).

Oleg Ivanov, deputy chairman of the film union, said "it is necessary to establish an academy and film award of the BRICS countries, where more than 40 percent of the world's population lives".

"Only one nomination out of 24 for the U.S. Oscars is awarded to a foreign film."

The idea came about earlier in the year at the annual BRICS summit, and the union is in talks with Russia's national film academy with the hopes of establishing the new body by 2016.

As for the common cinema-goer, this is an exciting prospect. It has the potential to bring into our collective minds film on a broader scale, with an opportunity to experience different cultures in different ways on the screen (big or small). Hopefully, it can bring further exposure to quieter, foreign artists.
