Forest Whitaker Character Crossing Over From 'Clone Wars' to 'Rogue One'
EW has revealed that Forest Whitaker will be playing Saw Gerrera, an extremist freedom fighter against the resistance who actually made his first appearance in the fifth season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
In the series, Andrew Kishino voiced the character, though the character shares very little with his new, big-screen rendition. In the show, Saw has bright blue eyes and very different scarring. Given the change in appearance, it's curious as to why the creators opted to include the character in the film at all, as opposed to an original character.
Between the events of Attack of the Clones an Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars introduced a young Saw on planet Onderon who fought alongside his sister in an insurgent group unofficially trained by Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka.
Following from his losses, Saw continued to fight in the ensuing decades, developing into a kind of hero/villain hybrid. Kathleen Kennedy described him as such: “Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists. He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”
