Former Reporter Impressed by Accuracy of 'The People vs. O.J. Simpson' Pilot
Episode one of FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story debuted to an audience of 5.1 million on Tuesday night, and among them was former Los Angeles Times reporter Jim Newton, who said he was "fairly impressed."
The now UCLA professor in communication studies expected a heavily dramatised, over the top event, considering it's not a documentary in particular. "I thought they were fairly true to the characterizations and the events as I knew them," Newton said. "I found it to be a fairly revealing and entertaining portrayal [of evens in that episode]."
Newton could only comment on the premiere, but the first episode leaves off heading into possibly the most famous, televised car chase of all time, which at the time "ate up" Newton's life. Newton expects it will "touch a lot of chords in American society: race, class, quality of the justice system, police community relations, briefly there's a debate about the death penalty..."
"...If the later episodes in the series are of the same quality as this one, they will be of great interest to people."
