Fox Apologises for X-Men: Apocalypse Ad Controversy
In the wake of actress Rose McGowan's outcry against some poor advertising on a billboard for X-Men: Apocalypse, Fox has released a statement apologising for the controversy with the promise to remove it from the public eye.
"In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn’t immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form. Once we realized how insensitive it was, we quickly took steps to remove those materials. We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women."
Understandably, this is a case of poor but unintended marketing. Many have, since McGowan's protest against it, outed the material as offensive and an approval of violence against women. The distaste for many comes from the fact that this is material that has been heavily pushed to try and fill seats. Notably, it begs the question of whether the studio may have felt the same impact could be felt had the villain been strangling a male protagonist.
Nevertheless, it's a tricky topic, and we'll be sure to keep an eye on any more news to come from this particular incident.
