'Game of Thrones' Officially Renewed for Season 7 by HBO
With Season 6 set to commence next week, there was no doubt that a seventh set of episodes was on the way. But HBO has now officially ordered a fresh batch of episodes, taking us back to Westeros as the series seems poised to begin its descent toward a climax.
The renewal does not come with a number of episodes ordered, though that comes as no surprise given HBO never lists this with an initial series order. The renewal comes alongside Veep and Silicone Valley, both of which will be back for sixth and fourth seasons, respectively.
Showrunners Benioff and Weiss have previously stated that there might only be thirteen episodes left after season 6, casting some doubt over what we can expect in next year's season.
Recently it was revealed that the new season will be less dark than season 5, and will feature callbacks to the first season. Longtime viewers of the show are sure to pull out their copies of season 1 to catch up, no doubt an attempt to avoid missing any of these references to a happier time (hint, Westeros was never that happy to begin with).
