'Game of Thrones' Showrunners don't understand Spoiler Culture
Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff head into uncharted territory with season 6, departing from a novel series that has failed to keep up with the strict deadlines of television. And without source material to go off, the showrunners have nevertheless thought it prudent to open the 'spoiler' conversation, voicing their confusion regarding audience's obsession.
Speaking with EW, the two discuss their misunderstanding of why people read spoilers. "Any sane person would admit that knowing this stuff in advance lessens the experience of watching it, and yet people are really hungry to find out things that will make something they presumably like worse for them," Weiss said. Before long, he'll delve into a psycho-analysis of the human condition. Or something.
The showrunners discuss some people who attempted to suss out secrets from the production's international sets. "It's crazy enough to be the person crawling through the bushes in Northern Ireland with a telescopic lens taking pictures - there are crazy people out there," Benioff said.
"But the idea that people want to go to sites and find out those spoilers... it's like if there was a website called Last Pages of Great Books, would you read that?"
Game of Thrones returns April 24.
