George Lucas Has No Interest in Directing Another Star Wars Film
George Lucas no longer has any desire in returning to the franchise he created, clearly drained from the experience last time around.
"You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticised," he told Vanity Fair. "And it's not much fun. You can't experiment."
That being said, he is still invested in the series, with interest in what came of Darth Vader's grandkids. On the franchise, he stated that "there's more to it than just spaceships".
J.J. Abrams is the first person to take over from Lucas in a Star Wars film, but Disney's intention means that there will be a new director at the helm of each new film in the trilogy. Rian Johnson will write and direct Episode VIII (releasing May 26, 2017), while Colin Trevorrow will direct Episode IX.
