'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' Will Not Be Getting a Big Screen Adaptation
Despite talk of a movie adaptation for the recent stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, for which reports surfaced that actor Daniel Radcliffe was approached about reprising his famed role, J.K. Rowling has dashed any fans' hopes of seeing the "eighth chapter in the Harry Potter series" on the big screen.
Taking to Twitter, Rowling denied rumours that had begun to circle about a film trilogy based on the play and subsequent script book. ""I know a lot of people are looking for reasons to be cheerful today, but there is NO TRUTH to the rumour about a #CursedChild movie trilogy!" she said.
The new story takes place nineteen years after the end of the Harry Potter story. Harry is an overworked Ministry Auror, and his youngest son is off to Hogwarts for the first time. Last week, theme park journalist and historian Jim Hill signaled on the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast that a "trilogy of movies that will be based on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" was in the work, and that all three of the film franchise's stars had been approached. Hill was respectful in response to Rowling's tweet, but adamant that his source was legitimate and that the trilogy would go into production after the five-part Fantastic Beasts franchise concludes.
Having read the book, I can regrettably say that this is a story that doesn't need to be adapted. This, for starters, is because it just isn't very good. It relies far too heavily on nostalgia and its characters feel like stripped-down parodies of their former selves. Nevertheless, it's not something Warner Bros. will ignore, particularly once the Fantastic Beasts films have come and gone.
