'Harry Potter' Producer Bringing Back 'Willy Wonka' for a Prequel Film
Ten years since the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Warner Bros. has put a new Willy Wonka movie into the pipeline. David Heyman, producer on all Harry Potter films (including Fantastic Beasts) is joining with the studio to make it happen.
While the film won't be an origin story (because there are enough of those), it will look at Wonka's earlier adventures. Warner Bros. had been in the process of acquiring the rights from the Roald Dahl estate, but the deal has only just been made.
Simon Rich will pen the script, and won't be drawing from either of Dahl's Wonka novels. Variety is reporting that the studio sees franchise potential, though of course every studio sees franchise potential in everything these days.
