HBO Developing 'HELLRAISER' Series
HBO has greenlit a new Hellraiser series with Halloween's David Gordon Green set to direct the pilot episode.
The deal comes as Executive Producers - Dan Farah (IT) and Roy Lee (Ready Player One) - purchased the rights back in 2019 and have since landed a deal with David Gordon Green set to direct the pilot and possibly more series episodes of WarnerMedia’s new premium series.
Sources confirm the series will be an “elevated continuation and expansion” based on the Hellraiser film franchise which originated from Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart. It's unknown if the series will be treated like an anthology or a more traditional narrative but what we do know is Mark Verheiden (Daredevil, Heroes) and Michael Dougherty (Trick r’Treat, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) will write the series with none other than Pinhead serving as the series centerpiece.
1987's Hellraiser is based on Clive Barker’s novella which spawned a total of ten films; nine of which Barker had anything to do with after relinquishing story and character rights before 1987's release. Talk of a big-screen remake began thirteen years ago only to find various creative minds clashing with The Weinstein Company-owned Dimension Films. Interestingly, the closest fans got to a Clive Barker-scripted remake was back in 2013. Three years later Barker confirmed that his script had indeed been delivered to the Weinstein's/Dimension but the project fell through for reasons unbeknownst to him. Shocker.
HBO’s series now marks one of two Hellraiser projects joining Spyglass Media and David S. Goyer’s efforts to resurrect their “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of Clive Barker’s 1987 film. As a fan of the original recipe, I must say that a series appeals more so than a reimagining of something that's already pretty great.
