HBO Head of Programming on Why 'Game of Thrones' Has Not Yet Been Ordered for Season 8
The eighth season, which is highly likely to be the final season, of Game of Thrones has yet to get an official order from HBO, despite the oft-quoted creators citing that the final two seasons will receive shorter episode orders. Now, HBO Programming President Casey Bloys has given a reason, and it's one filled with hope for fans who want more (which is to say, everyone).
While creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have insisted that season 7 would run for seven episodes and season 8 for six, Boys said that the delay on a renewal is due to them "working out how many episodes they want to do."
"They're still figuring it out because I think they're trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It's all about how many [episodes] they're comfortable [with]. But I'll always take more."
Benioff has stated that he doesn't want the show to outstay its welcome, which is important (even if most people will argue that Game of Thrones could never outstay its welcome). The show is winding down now towards its epic conclusion, it's just a matter of how many hours it takes to finish this far-reaching tale.
