Incredibles 2 - Movie Review
Somehow in the last 14 years, we got 3 Cars movies and didn't get a sequel to The Incredibles until now. All I'm sayin', it's about time. Here's my take on INCREDIBLES 2!
Incredibles 2 is directed and written by Brad Bird and is the long-awaited sequel to Bird’s original 2004 film. “Long-awaited” may be the biggest understatement of the year, or of the last fourteen years. But the Incredibles have finally returned to the big screen!
This sequel picks up right where the first film left off with the Incredibles and all other heroes still being adhere to their secret identities. With the “Super Relocation” program being shutdown, our heroes, specifically Elastigirl, finds an opportunity to better the image of all supers in the public eye in order to regain their trust.
The Incredibles is my favorite animated film of all time. As a movie for kids, it’s great entertainment with fun characters and stylish animation. As a movie for adults, Bird’s direction and writing made for a highly engaging story with situations that felt plausible and underlying messages that felt real. That said, I’m thrilled to report that Incredibles 2 is a great return to form and everything we’ve come to love about this family.
Despite not seeing these characters for more than a decade, The Incredibles still feel extremely well-defined and fleshed out. You can identify with them and you can relate to them, they feel like real people with real life dilemmas.
The Incredible Family still feel like an actual family, which was a very important aspect of the first film and the chemistry amongst them remains intact. It’s just a great family dynamic and I have to give credit where it’s due to the talented voice cast that bring these characters to life.
The action in this film is exhilarating in every sense of the word, rivaling the action of the first film. Obviously, the animation technology we use today has made great strides in improvement and all the money that goes into the art that is showcased on screen. Just the attention to detail that Disney/Pixar has with their animation is just insane.
For a long while now, Disney/Marvel studios have continued to utilize the following idea: As long as your protagonist is written strong, then it will make up for a weak antagonist.
Unlike the predecessor, Incredibles 2 takes on that specific aspect. The “Screen Slaver” is quite frankly a bad villain. About thirty minutes in, you’ll know exactly who is orchestrating everything that is going wrong for The Incredibles.
While that notion has been played out for years now, Disney/Marvel has since perfected it with their movies. The Incredibles as characters are so well-realized that we’re willing to go along with them and watch them overcome any obstacle. The weak villain in this film can just be categorized as a nitpick because we’re just so high off the return of these fun, interesting characters.
Final Take
Fourteen years worth the wait? Well, it was better now than never! In all seriousness, Incredibles 2 lives up to all the hype and then some. This is such a fun, exciting, action-packed, beautifully animated follow-up to the original.
It may not quite reach the heights of the first film, but it certainly lives up to its name. This is one of my favorites of the year and I can’t implore people enough to get out and see this with family and friends of all ages.
I’m going to give Incredibles 2 an “A-” as my final take. If there’s any crime to report, it’s that Jack-Jack steals the show in every scene he’s in. That baby is incredible.
