Indiana Jones 5 to Continue on from 'Crystal Skull,' Franchise Will Never Replace Harrison Ford
It's hard to say whether there's more excitement or more apprehension toward the upcoming return of Indiana Jones, particularly in light of the news that the production has hired the writer behind the much-despised Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
And while some might have hoped that this new film would retcon that one, that won't be the case. The new feature will follow on from that film as a continuation, according to producer Frank Marshall, who spoke with Variety at CinemaCon.
How closely that ties to the previous film is unclear, in regards to bringing over characters such as Shia LaBeouf's into the mix. It's unlikely, as this is sure to play like a kind of re-introduction, and the carry-over might be loose.
Marshall meanwhile continues to assert that Harrison Ford is the only person who can and will fill the role of Indiana Jones. "It's all about the story. I think both in the 'Jason Bourne' series and on 'Indiana Jones,' we are not going to do the Bond thing," Marshall said regarding new casting on the films. "We think those characters are iconic, and those are the only actors who can play that."
There may only be so much of a say Marshall has, particularly given Disney's expenditure on the LucasFilm properties. We'll have to wait and see on that one.
