International Box Office May Keep Terminator Franchise Alive
'Terminator: Genisys' has earned a day-one tally of $27M over in China, following a poor showing at the box office domestically.
After an opening 5-day haul of $43.2M in the US, the fifth installment of the series that launched with the cult classic 'The Terminator' never took off. It finished with a total of $89.1M.
With China's input so far, the film's international box office has risen to a total of $353M, and its day-one income is the fourth-highest for an American film in China (three of which released this year).
The film's huge launch may be explained by China's 'summer blackout', which has lasted since June and was implemented by the desire to support homegrown films before bringing Hollywood blockbusters to the big screen. If that's the case, then interest clearly equals sales, and the delay may well have boosted ticket sales.
