"It was Incredibly Organic" - Zack Snyder, Gal Gadot on Wonder Woman's Role in the DCEU
The new DC cinematic universe has expanded at a rapid pace in recent months, with news coming out that clearly tells us there is a long, hard thought plan on the walls at Warner Bros.
Wonder Woman could be considered the starting point for that expansive thought process, squeezing her way into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and then demanding her own solo presence, coming next year before any other of the Justice League members (excluding the universe-launching Man of Steel).
"It was incredible organic how Wonder Woman came into the story," director Zack Snyder said. "The whole concept came of, 'Let's not save anything. Let's try it all.' Then Wonder Woman's entrance made us realise we were much closer to the Justice League than we thought. We realised we were one movie away."
Concerns are rife that Batman v Superman might just be setting up the universe going forward, rather than existing as its own entity. In the article, found in Empire Magazine, it's revealed that Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is 5,000 years old.
"Because she's seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight," Gadot said. "They have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don't want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty."
Executive producer Deborah Snyder explained Wonder Woman's role as a feminist icon, saying "Gender has been a hot topic, so it is very timely to bring her back. The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there.
"Looking back and doing an origin story - and it is a period piece - see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humour in that now. It is so unbelievable you can't fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it."
Formulaic concerns are fair, as this film seems poised to take us from the hero v hero action to the trinity v alien match-up. Once the novelty wears off, will it hold?
