James Cameron Adds a Fifth Film to his 'Avatar' Master Plan
James Cameron has spoken at the 20th Century Fox panel at CinemaCon, offering an update on his Avatar franchise and announcing a fourth sequel in addition to the previously-reported three planned follow-ups to the 2009 film.
Cameron announced that each sequel is designed as a standalone story, but will "form a complete saga" as a cohesive whole.
The first sequel is slated for December 2018, nine years after the original. The second will follow in 2020, the third in 2022, and the final one in 2023.
The first film remains the highest grossing film of all time with $2.782 billion worldwide. It lost out domestically to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with $749 million versus The Force Awakens' $935 million.
