James Cameron Plans to Push the 'Avatar Franchise' Into Every Medium Possible
Speaking with Vulture, James Cameron continues to do plenty of talking but very little showing when it comes to the definitely still happening sequels to 2009''s Avatar.
But the revered filmmaker doesn't plan to limit his vision to just the big screen.
“We’ll use every possible medium we can. I mean, obviously, the films are the cornerstone of it, but we’ll be in graphic novels, novels, everything. Every possible way we can give you a portal into the world of Pandora and that universe, we will.”
It looks like, in the coming years, we're going to be bombarded with Avatar-centric material, so if you weren't particularly into the first film, then you might want to go radio-silent for a while.
He does, however, see the project as too expensive for television. He did, however, comment on the Cirque du Soleil show Toruk: The First Flight, which spawned into a prequel to Avatar set centuries prior to the first film. Combating the height issue for the show, they came to the conclusion that reaching into that world's past was most efficient.
"...Eventually they came back with the idea of, Well let’s just set it in the deep past. Let’s go back to the very first Toruk Makto, the first rider of the Toruk."
Avatar 2 is slated for 2018, the next 2020, the fourth 2022, and the fifth 2023. They may change, because that's what happens with these films (the second was slated for 2014 once upon a time.) For now, we wait and see.
