James Wan Talks a Reluctant Hero in 'Aquaman,' Working from Zack Snyder's Interpretation
With Aquaman coming in 2018, and Justice League prior to that set to debut Jason Momoa as Aquaman (and it seems likely he'll play a major role), James Wan has plenty to think about even as the DCEU so far must try and even the scales critically.
"Early on, Zack tried to involve me as much as he could, and I really appreciated that," Wan said. "If you have water in your lungs, like these characters do, there's no air bubble. So I don't know... I just think in my movie, I want to kind of create... I love the idea of underwater speaking but with a real sort of sonic, aquatic quality to it.
"So there's this sort of aquatic, almost sonar/whale thing. Even though it's in a human language, there’s this slight sort of underlay to it, this ping to it, which I think would be interesting for us to design from a sound design perspective," Wan said.
Wan is glad for the opportunity to learn what works and what doesn't coming from Justice League, prepared to be flexible with his interpretation of the character. He considers Geoff Johns' recent comic book run on the character as a "leaping off point," with nothing but praise.
Wan sees the character as "kind of the Wolverine in some respect," noting the fact that he is an "outsider who gets pulled into this world and he kind of doesn't want to belong.
"He prided freedom above everything else... that kind of plays nicely into who his character is. He's like a reluctant superhero, right? He's the reluctant king, basically, or would-be king."
We'll get our first taste of Aquaman on November 17, 2017 with Justice League.
