J.J. Abrams Calls Mark Hamill's Performance in 'The Last Jedi' Oscar-Worthy

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams took to the stage at the 12th Annual Oscar Wilde Awards at Bad Robot headquarters in LA, and detailed hopes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi Oscar potential.

“I think we are all going to be very upset if he does not win an Oscar, and no one more upset than Mark,” said Abrams, who may or may not have been kidding given the nature of the awards, Comingsoon said. “He is hysterically funny. He has done comedy. He is an amazing guy — he can do anything.”

Jokes aside, Alec Guinness landed a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1978 for playing Luke's mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, and there was buzz for Frank Oz's puppeteering work as Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back. So, there's precedent at least.

The sequel opens December 15, 2017.
